Nepal Begins Mass Burials as Mortuaries Overflow After Catastrophic Monsoon Floods

Nepal has initiated mass burials as hospital morgues and temporary cooling facilities across the country completely run out of capacity following a catastrophic surge of monsoon flash floods.

With the death toll climbing past 600 and thousands still missing, major medical centers in Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Pokhara are overwhelmed beyond their limits.

Prompted by severe public health hazards, rising decomposition rates, and the risk of waterborne diseases, local authorities and the Ministry of Home Affairs authorized mass interments for unidentified and unclaimed victims.

To ensure future reconciliation, forensic teams are strictly cataloging every individual before burial. Officials are systematically recording DNA samples, fingerprints, distinctive dental traits, and clear photographs, assigning unique reference numbers to each body bag.

This protocol ensures families retain the possibility of locating loved ones or exhuming remains for traditional funeral rites once identification is established.
