Trump Swaps Hormuz Tolls for Gulf Cash
President Donald Trump has abruptly canceled his proposed 20% "United States Reimbursement Fee" on cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The swift reversal followed intense pushback from international allies and shipping markets over the astronomical costs and legal unfeasibility of the maritime toll.
Instead, Trump announced a new arrangement after discussions with Gulf leaders, claiming Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait will instead make "massive," record-breaking investments directly into U.S. manufacturing and trade infrastructure.
While the shift defuses a major economic rift with Gulf allies, the geopolitical situation on the water remains precarious. The U.S. military is still proceeding with a naval blockade on Iranian ports, and recent military strikes continue to threaten commercial shipping safety in the critical energy waterway.
