Russia Endorses India’s Permanent Seat on UN Security Council
Russia has reaffirmed its strong support for India to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the urgent need to give greater representation to the Global South.
During his recent UN address, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov advocated for both India and Brazil, stating that the current council structure fails to reflect modern geopolitical realities.
Notably, Lavrov opposed expanding permanent seats to Western nations like Germany and Japan, citing concerns over regional balance.
While India continues to gain broad international backing, achieving permanent membership remains a complex challenge.
It requires a two-thirds majority vote in the UN General Assembly and the consent of all five current permanent members, including China, which holds a more cautious stance on the expansion.
This ongoing diplomatic push underscores shifting global dynamics and the growing push for institutional reform.
