CJI Surya Kant: Courts Will Defend Students' Peaceful Protest Rights
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant firmly asserted that the judiciary will fiercely protect students' fundamental right to peaceful protest, emphasizing that courts will never ignore police repression or constitutional infringements.
Speaking during an interactive session with students at Chanakya National Law University in Patna, the CJI reassured attendees that the judicial system stands as a steadfast guardian of democratic freedoms.
Addressing broader topics, Justice Kant also defended the confidentiality surrounding dissenting opinions in the collegium process, explaining that total transparency must be balanced against protecting a candidate's personal dignity and reputation.
Additionally, he voiced support for modernizing legal education by proposing a streamlined four-year curriculum combined with a mandatory final-year court apprenticeship.
This candid dialogue highlighted the judiciary's proactive approach to safeguarding student liberties while navigating complex institutional processes and shaping the future of legal training in India.
