Bangladesh Halts Indian Hilsa Imports Amid Mislabelling Concerns

Bangladesh has abruptly suspended hilsa fish imports from India by cancelling crucial no-objection certificates for importers.

This decision follows a recent historic shipment of the prized fish from Gujarat's Bharuch port, marking the first time Bangladesh imported hilsa from India.

Authorities halted the trade primarily to prevent imported Indian fish from being deceptively sold as authentic local "Padma hilsa."

Culinary experts note that Padma hilsa, celebrated for its unique fragrance and sweetness, is significantly fattier and tender than its western counterpart.

In contrast, Gujarati hilsa is leaner with a higher roe content, giving it a comparatively bitter taste.

Additionally, Dhaka has not yet announced the customary seasonal shipments of hilsa to India, which usually occur annually ahead of the Durga Puja festival, leaving traders and consumers uncertain about future cross-border availability.
