SP Veteran and Former UP Assembly LoP Ram Govind Chaudhary Dies at 74
Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Ram Govind Chaudhary, passed away late Thursday night at SGPGI Hospital in Lucknow at the age of 74.
He had been undergoing treatment for age-related health issues and chronic ailments.
An eight-time MLA, Chaudhary began his political journey during the 1970s student movement in Ballia. He actively participated in Jayaprakash Narayan’s anti-Emergency campaign, for which he was jailed. He first entered the UP Assembly in 1977 from Chilkahar and later represented the Bansdih constituency.
Over a political career spanning nearly five decades, he served as a senior cabinet minister under Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav, holding portfolios including Basic Education and Panchayati Raj. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the Leader of Opposition, representing SP’s primary voice in the assembly.
