Lok Sabha Sets 7-Day Deadline for 20 TMC Rebel MPs in Defection Case

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has issued formal notices to 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, imposing a strict 7-day deadline to respond to disqualification petitions filed against them.

The crisis erupted after these lawmakers aligned with a splinter group, prompting senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee to seek their disqualification under the Tenth Schedule (Anti-Defection Law) for voluntarily giving up party membership.

This administrative action follows severe scrutiny from the Supreme Court, which directed that anti-defection proceedings cannot face indefinite delays.

The high-profile list of implicated lawmakers includes prominent figures like Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Satabdi Roy, and Yusuf Pathan.

Once the 7-day window closes, the Speaker is expected to review the submissions and conduct hearings to reach a definitive verdict on whether their parliamentary membership will be terminated.
