India Surpasses UAE and Saudi Arabia as Kenya’s Top Fuel Supplier

India has emerged as Kenya’s leading supplier of refined petroleum products, surpassing traditional Middle Eastern heavyweights Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

This structural shift was accelerated by regional disruptions along vital shipping lanes, prompting Nairobi to diversify its energy partnerships away from historic government-to-government agreements with Gulf suppliers.

Capitalizing on its massive refining capacity centered in Gujarat, India rapidly expanded its footprint in East Africa by stepping in to fill the supply deficit.

While India itself imports the vast majority of its crude oil, its sophisticated processing infrastructure enables it to dominate the export market for finished fuels like gasoline and diesel.

This evolving trade dynamic not only underscores India's rising influence as a global energy refiner but also signals a fundamental realignment of energy supply chains across the African continent.
