Centre Proposes Complete Ban on Carbosulfan Insecticide
The Central government has issued a draft notification proposing a complete ban on the manufacture, import, sale, and use of Carbosulfan, a widely utilized insecticide for paddy, cotton, and various horticultural crops.
The move follows recommendations from an expert committee highlighting severe health and environmental risks.
Carbosulfan rapidly metabolizes into carbofuran, a highly toxic substance known to cause acute neurological damage, and notably lacks a specific antidote. Furthermore, regulators raised concerns over its high toxicity to non-target species, including beneficial pollinators and aquatic life.
Stakeholders, manufacturers, and the public have a 30-day window to submit objections or suggestions.
Once finalized, all existing manufacturing registrations will be cancelled. While this prohibition aims to safeguard human health and agricultural ecosystems, it will require farmers to transition toward safer alternative chemicals and bio-pesticides for effective pest management.
