Bail Denied for Three Months Over Chicken Biryani? Justice Bhuyan Calls Out Shrinking Civil Liberties
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the Supreme Court strongly criticized the erosion of civil liberties and the criminalization of everyday activities during the 4th Justice G.P. Singh Memorial Lecture in Bhopal.
Highlighting a shocking miscarriage of justice, he pointed to a case where several youngsters spent three months in jail without bail simply for organizing an Iftar party and eating chicken biryani on a boat on the Ganga river. Questioning the legal basis, he emphasized that consuming chicken over a river is not an offense.
Justice Bhuyan expressed deep concern over how ordinary actions, student demonstrations, and peaceful protests are increasingly treated as criminal conduct. He warned that harsh and restrictive bail conditions undermine fundamental freedoms, instill fear, and deter citizens from exercising their constitutional right to dissent.
