End of an Era: Jantar Mantar Stripped of Protest Site Status; Delhi Police Names 3 New Venues
In a significant policy shift, the Delhi Police has officially de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated site for public demonstrations and protests.
The decision stems from recommendations made by a high-level committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to find suitable alternative locations that balance civic rights with urban movement and public safety.
To replace the iconic venue along Sansad Marg, authorities have designated three alternate grounds across the national capital:
Ramlila Ground (Central Delhi)
Burari Ground (North Delhi)
CBD Ground (Karkardooma, East Delhi)
The official order, issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, partially modifies the 2022 Standing Order governing public assemblies.
For decades, Jantar Mantar served as the central hub for citizen agitations due to its proximity to Parliament. However, continuous demonstrations frequently triggered severe traffic gridlocks in Connaught P
lace and raised security concerns around key government establishments.
Delhi Police announced that a comprehensive, revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) detailing permission processes and security protocols for demonstrations at the three newly assigned venues will be released shortly.
