Protests in Delhi: SC directs no illegal detention, restoration of internet and metro services

The Supreme Court directed the Centre and authorities to ensure that Delhi Metro services operate on a normal schedule and that mobile internet services face no disruptions during the Cockroach Janta Party's Jantar Mantar protest.

Hearing a batch of petitions and contempt pleas challenging heavy transit restrictions, the bench emphasized that maintaining public order must not come at the cost of sweeping public inconvenience.

The court criticized blanket closures of metro stations and communications blocks, cautioning authorities against using disproportionate measures that severely impact everyday commuters, students, and employees.

While acknowledging the government's duty to maintain security, the apex court underscored the principle of proportionality, making it clear that critical infrastructure and communication channels cannot be arbitrarily shut down.

Authorities must now balance security protocols with commuter rights, ensuring freedom of movement and access to digital services remain unhindered as demonstrations unfold.
