Chhattisgarh's Wildlife Revival: Gomarda Sanctuary Set to Welcome 50 Blackbucks After 50 Years
Chhattisgarh is writing a remarkable conservation success story as it prepares to reintroduce fifty blackbucks into the Gomarda Wildlife Sanctuary, located within the Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district.
This historic milestone marks the return of the graceful antelope species to a landscape where it completely vanished five decades ago.
This ambitious translocation follows the phenomenal triumph of a similar initiative at the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary.
Launched in 2018, that program successfully restored a thriving blackbuck population nearly a century after local extinction, turning a zero-count into a thriving herd of over one hundred animals.
By expanding the species into Gomarda, forest and wildlife authorities aim to achieve multiple ecological goals.
The move will establish a second secure home for the antelope in the state, alleviate population pressure at Barnawapara, and significantly boost regional biodiversity.
Conservationists hope this carefully planned relocation will allow the herds to flourish once again, ensuring long-term survival and restoring the natural grassland heritage of Chhattisgarh for future generations.
