Vatican Confirms Lung Cancer Diagnosis for Pope Leo XIV Following Successful Surgery

The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma—a common form of non-small cell lung cancer—following a scheduled thoracic procedure at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Surgeons successfully removed the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung using a video-assisted technique during a 90-minute operation.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the 71-year-old pontiff came through the procedure without complications, awoke normally from anesthesia, and is resting in his hospital suite.

The nodule had been caught at an early stage during routine testing, prompting the Pope to inform worshippers beforehand that it was well-contained.

In response to the diagnosis, the Vatican has cancelled all of the Pope's public audiences and engagements through October 20 to ensure a full post-operative recovery.

While administrative duties continue, affairs requiring his personal signature are temporarily paused.

Church officials, led by Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, have expressed deep confidence and urged worldwide prayers for his swift healing.
