NCERT Revises Class 9 History Textbook to Highlight Medieval Resistance
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has updated its Class 9 Social Science curriculum with a new textbook titled Understanding Society: India and Beyond (Part 2).
At the center of this revision is a newly added chapter, "Resistance and Resilience (1000 CE–1700 CE)," which reshapes how medieval Indian history is taught.
Rather than focusing solely on centralized empires, the curriculum emphasizes regional defense and the martial traditions of local rulers against successive foreign invasions.
Notable additions include stories of regional figures—such as Queen Naiki Devi and Chhatrapati Shivaji—framing their military struggles alongside cultural narratives, such as receiving divine swords from goddesses to protect sovereignty.
The text also highlights lesser-known conflicts, including the Ahom resistance in Assam, alongside broader religious and architectural dynamics like temple reconstructions.
NCERT states these updates aim to provide students with a more comprehensive, civilizational perspective on historical endurance and resilience.
