TRAI Overhauls Mobile Rules: Jio, Airtel, and Vi Must Now Offer Data-Free Plans
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced landmark regulations reshaping mobile recharge plans for Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea users.
Set to take effect on October 21, 2026, the rules mandate that telecom operators provide exclusive voice and SMS-only plans without forcing bundled data.
Under the updated guidelines, for every data-bundled pack with a validity of 30 days or less, telcos must offer a cheaper, data-free alternative.
This ends the controversial 28-day billing cycle by introducing a calendar-aligned monthly renewal option, ensuring users recharge 12 times a year instead of 13.
Longer-validity data-free vouchers will also be made available.
TRAI stepped in after discovering that previous data-free mandates saw operators offering only token, overpriced options.
Millions of low-income users and budget-conscious consumers were forced to pay for unused mobile data.
While telecom operators resisted the change, citing potential network architecture challenges and security risks, TRAI prioritized consumer choice and affordability. This regulatory shift delivers long-awaited relief to millions of feature-phone and budget users across India.
