Mobile Retailers Announce 'No UPI Day' on October 2 Over MDR Fee Dispute
Mobile phone retailers across India, led by the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA), will observe 'No UPI Day' on October 2 by covering their QR codes with black cloth.
This protest targets the upcoming introduction of a 0.4 percent Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on person-to-merchant UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000, set to take effect on October 15.
Retailers are demanding a complete rollback of these merchant fees to maintain a zero-MDR structure.
Because mobile retail involves high-value transactions that frequently cross the ₹2,000 threshold, businesses argue that the new charges will heavily erode their thin profit margins.
Trade associations estimate that this policy could inflict significant monthly losses on individual stores, creating an overall financial burden running into hundreds of crores annually for the nationwide retail ecosystem.
