Cabinet Secretariat Declines Direct Interference in Poll Panel Dispute
The Cabinet Secretariat declined to take direct administrative action on complaints filed by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi against senior EC officer Maneesh Garg, an RTI reply shows.
Sandhu and Joshi alleged that Garg bypassed them by issuing an order revising work distribution without proper consultation, violating the CEC Act.
However, internal notes reveal the Secretariat refused to intervene, citing that the complaints came from individual commissioners rather than the poll body collectively. Stepping in without a unified mandate would risk inappropriate executive interference in an independent constitutional body.
While the Secretariat forwarded the letters to the DoPT and the Chief Election Commissioner's office for record-keeping, no direct punitive steps were taken. The Election Commission ultimately confirmed that the disputed work-redistribution orders were never implemented following objections raised by the two commissioners.
