High Court Slams Authorities as Mumbai Smog Surpasses Delhi
The Bombay High Court has fiercely criticized civic officials over Mumbai's alarming air quality crisis, describing the severe smog as an emergency that threatens public health.
With pollution levels frequently eclipsing those of Delhi, the bench questioned how responsible authorities could sleep peacefully while citizens struggle to breathe.
The court pointed directly to rampant, unregulated construction dust, lax enforcement of environmental guidelines, and unchecked violations.
Dismissing the reliance on seasonal sea breezes to clear the air, judges demanded immediate accountability from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
The judiciary has summoned top officials to explain their administrative failures and enforce strict preventative protocols.
Experts warn that without stringent mitigation, continuous smog exposure will trigger a surge in respiratory illnesses across the metropolitan region, necessitating long-term urban planning reforms rather than temporary reactive measures.
