MCD Seals 54 Chandni Chowk Jewellery Shops Over Basement Violations
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed 54 jewellery and bullion shops in the Kucha Mahajani area of Chandni Chowk for using basements for commercial operations.
The enforcement action, directed by the Supreme Court's Monitoring Committee, cited severe violations of the Unified Building Bye-Laws 2016 and the Master Plan for Delhi 2021.
Officials stated that operating commercial establishments in these basements violated safety codes, lacking mandatory fire clearances.
The crackdown caused widespread panic among local traders, who reported that crores of rupees worth of gold, silver, and business assets remain locked inside the sealed properties.
Trade associations criticized the municipal body, alleging that authorities executed the sealing drive abruptly without providing prior notice or an opportunity to address compliance issues.
The MCD maintains that strict adherence to safety protocols is non-negotiable to prevent building hazards.
