TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's aide detained by West Bengal CID

Kolkata: The West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested Sumit Roy, personal assistant (PA) to Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, from the leader's Kalighat residence in Kolkata.

The high-profile detention follows the Supreme Court's decision to reject Roy’s anticipatory bail plea and vacate its earlier interim order that had shielded him from arrest. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant noted that Roy failed to cooperate adequately with the ongoing investigation.

The case stems from an alleged major land-grab scam in Salboni, located in the West Midnapore district. Investigators accuse Roy of being a primary figure in the illegal sale of state government land, with the illicit financial proceeds allegedly channeled into party accounts. Following a brief standoff with private security personnel at the premises, CID and Special Task Force (STF) teams executed the raid and transferred Roy to the Bhabani Bhaban headquarters for intense interrogation. Authorities plan to produce him before a local court to seek official police custody.
