Jantar Mantar Protests AAP Leaders and Student Activists Detained Over CEC Demands

NEW DELHI: Tensions flared in the national capital as Delhi Police detained over 500 protesters, including prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj alongside student activists, during a high-profile demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

The protesters had gathered to demand the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Demonstrators raised strong objections against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and alleged wrongful voter deletions, calling for absolute transparency in poll panel appointments.

Authorities moved swiftly to curb the unauthorized gathering. The Delhi Police enforced strict prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS across the New Delhi district, deploying heavy security barricades, Rapid Action Force personnel, and drone surveillance. Public movement was severely disrupted as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation temporarily closed entry and exit gates at approximately 12 major metro stations.

Opposition figures condemned the mass detentions, labeling them an infringement on democratic rights. Political fallout is expected to intensify as parties debate the management of the electoral roll controversy and civil liberties in the capital
