The United States has escalated its economic pressure by penalizing foreign buyers of Russian oil, aiming to drain Moscow's war chest. Yet, Washington simultaneously permits vital imports of Russian enriched uranium.
This asymmetry stems from stark domestic vulnerabilities. While alternative global oil suppliers can partially cushion a pivot away from Moscow, the American nuclear sector faces a critical shortage of domestic enrichment infrastructure.
To prevent crippling blackouts and reactor shutdowns, the U.S. relies on statutory waivers allowing continued Russian nuclear fuel imports until domestic alternatives scale up.
Unsurprisingly, this double standard frustrates emerging economies like India, which face their own energy security crises when pressured to cut off affordable Russian crude.
Critics argue that Washington's selective enforcement undermines its moral authority, exposing a pragmatic willingness to prioritize American grid stability over uniform global sanctions compliance.
