The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has triggered fresh controversy by awarding a lucrative Rs 14-crore trash barrier project to a company previously disqualified over its involvement in a desilting scam.
The decision has shocked citizens and civic watchdogs, especially as it coincides with intense scrutiny from the Bombay High Court.
The High Court recently slammed India's richest civic body, warning officials over widespread garbage, administrative inaction, and the city's worsening filth crisis.
Critics argue that clearing a tainted vendor for pre-monsoon water channels and waste management highlights a glaring loophole in the BMC's vetting process.
The civic body, however, maintains that the contractor cleared all legal and technical re-evaluations for the floating debris project.
This appointment deepens concerns regarding transparency and accountability in Mumbai's multi-crore sanitation contracts.
