Uttarakhand Police File FIR Against Rahul Gandhi Over 'Casteist Spin' Allegations
Uttarakhand Police registered an FIR against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi following a complaint by Amit Kumar, a Valmiki community member. The case invokes the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The controversy stems from an August 2026 political rally in Haldwani featuring Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Following the event, local organizers conducted a purification (shuddhikaran) ritual at the venue.
While organizers maintained the drive aimed to address litter and slogans, Congress leaders—including Kharge and Gandhi—condemned it as an anti-Dalit manifestation of untouchability. Gandhi subsequently demanded legal action against the organizers.
The latest police complaint counters this narrative. Scheduled Caste participants and community members argued that Gandhi’s public statements falsely politicized a routine community cleanliness drive, branding local SC participants as perpetrators of caste discrimination and outraging their religious feelings.
