Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma Makes History
Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has etched her name in the annals of Indian military history by becoming the first non-medical woman officer in the Indian Armed Forces to achieve a two-star rank.
Commissioned into the IAF's Education Branch in June 1994, her historic ascension to Air Vice Marshal marks a monumental milestone for gender inclusivity in national defense.
Assuming charge as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education), her journey is defined by groundbreaking achievements.
Prior to this, she was the first woman Group Captain outside the medical corps and the first tri-services woman officer to command a Sainik School.
Her tenure is further distinguished by spearheading strategic academic collaborations, including IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University.
This landmark promotion shatters long-standing structural barriers, paving the way for future generations of women to command at the highest echelons of India's military leadership.
