Urgent Shift Needed as Central and Northwest India Heat Hotspots Surge 40%


Recent scientific findings reveal that extreme heat hotspots across central and northwest India expanded by up to 40 percent per decade between 1971 and 2022.

What began as isolated pockets of extreme temperature in the 1980s has evolved into broad, interconnected zones of severe heat stress by the 2010s. Northwest India has emerged as the country’s primary epicenter, driven by intense daytime spikes, arid conditions, and drying soils.

Meanwhile, regional studies highlight contrasting climate vulnerabilities: the south faces rapid drying and drought risks, while the northeast struggles with erratic monsoon patterns.

Experts stress that these compounding crises render traditional, uniform national policies obsolete.

Effective climate resilience requires decentralized, region-specific frameworks—such as aggressive heat-action plans in the northwest, robust water conservation in the south, and advanced flood management systems in the northeast.
