Marathi Film 'Gondhal' Named India's Official Oscar Entry for 2027
The acclaimed Marathi thriller "Gondhal," directed by Santosh Davakhar, has been officially selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027).
Beating a competitive pool of 33 films, the jury selected the movie for its gripping narrative. Set over a single tense night, the film unfolds against the backdrop of a traditional rural Maharashtrian Gondhal ritual, blending deep cultural roots with a high-stakes thriller format.
It stars a talented ensemble cast featuring Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam, Yogesh Sohoni, and Nishad Bhoir.
This marks a significant milestone for regional cinema, making Gondhal only the fourth Marathi film ever chosen to represent India at the Oscars, following legendary predecessors like Shwaas and Court.
