Tarun Tejpal Surrenders in Goa After High Court Overturns 2021 Acquittal
Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal surrendered before the Additional Sessions Court in Mapusa, Goa, following the Supreme Court's refusal to grant him an exemption from surrender. He was subsequently remanded to the Central Jail at Colvale to begin serving a ten-year sentence for the sexual assault of a junior colleague.
The case stems from an incident inside a resort elevator in Goa in November 2013. A trial court initially acquitted Tejpal in May 2021. However, the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court overturned that verdict, convicting him of rape and wrongful confinement.
Challenging the High Court's ruling, Tejpal petitioned the Supreme Court for interim relief and an exemption from surrendering. The apex court rejected the plea, mandating that he turn himself in and present a surrender certificate before his statutory appeal is officially scheduled for a formal hearing.
