Noida DM Medha Roopam Approaches Supreme Court Over Allahabad HC Salary Deduction Ruling
Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam has filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court’s directive holding her personally liable to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation.
The legal battle stems from the High Court's September 2 ruling, which quashed the National Security Act (NSA) detention of 25-year-old Delhi University graduate Akriti Chaudhary.
Chaudhary had been detained following a workers' wage protest in Noida in April.
The High Court severely criticized DM Roopam for signing off on the detention without adequate material scrutiny, warning that "despotic" bureaucratic actions risk driving the state toward an "Orwellian Dystopia".
Crucially, the bench ordered that the ₹5 lakh compensation be recovered directly from the personal salaries of responsible officials, including the District Magistrate and the local Station House Officer.
