Gujarat Lion Mortality Sparks Urgent Conservation Focus
Recent data from the Gujarat Legislative Assembly reveals that 62 Asiatic lions died from illnesses over the preceding year, with cubs accounting for 28 of those fatalities.
Post-mortem findings point to a range of medical complications, including pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and parasitic conditions, rather than a single epidemic outbreak.
The mortality figures underscore the vulnerability of the world’s only wild Asiatic lion population to disease.
While experts note that underlying vector-borne ailments often trigger organ failure, the state forest department maintains that regular monitoring is keeping the broader population stable.
To mitigate further losses, authorities have ramped up veterinary interventions.
These include deploying dedicated wildlife ambulances, administering routine deworming treatments, and vaccinating domestic livestock in surrounding fringe villages to prevent cross-species transmission.
Enhanced tracking via local networks aims to ensure rapid medical responses for any distressed wildlife.
