Former Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee Found Dead in Birbhum TMC Office
Kolkata: Veteran Trinamool Congress leader and former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside a party office in Rampurhat, Birbhum district.
A purported suicide note was recovered from the scene by the police, who have sent the body for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Banerjee, a five-time MLA, represented the Rampurhat constituency from 2001 until earlier this year. During his decades-long political career, he held key ministerial portfolios, including Agriculture and School Education, before serving as the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly.
Recently, he contested the 2026 assembly elections but faced defeat. Following the electoral setback, he stepped down as the chairman of the TMC's Birbhum district core committee.
Police investigations into the tragic incident are currently underway, sending shockwaves through the state's political landscape.
