Sri Lanka Navy Apprehends Nine Indian Fishermen for Alleged Poaching

Ramanathapuram: The Sri Lanka Navy has arrested nine Indian fishermen and seized their mechanized trawler off the coast of Delft Island, Jaffna, on charges of illegal fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters. The apprehension was executed by the naval ship SLNS Samudura during a routine patrol.

Following the interception, the detained fishermen—originating from the Rameswaram region in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district—along with their confiscated vessel, were brought to the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Harbour. They have subsequently been handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR) for further legal procedures under local maritime laws.

This latest incident underscores the persistent tension surrounding maritime boundary crossings in the Palk Strait, the narrow body of water separating India and Sri Lanka. Frequent incursions by fishermen from both sides often lead to mid-sea detentions and boat seizures, prompting continuous diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Colombo to secure the release of detained fishers and establish a long-term, amicable resolution to livelihood conflicts in the region
