Three Women Journalists Allege Sexual Assault by ACP at Delhi Protest
New Delhi: During a demonstration near Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, three women journalists covering the event alleged sexual harassment and assault by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and other police personnel.
The incident unfolded on October 3, 2026, as reporters covered protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. At least one journalist specifically accused ACP Vivek Bhagat of groping and sexual assault during the police crackdown.
The allegations triggered immediate outrage. Journalists and media bodies staged a hours-long sit-in outside the Parliament Street Police Station, demanding an immediate First Information Report against the accused officer. Facing intense public pressure and widespread condemnation from opposition leaders and civil society groups, the Delhi Police transferred the investigation to the Crime Branch for an impartial inquiry.
Media unions continue to demand strict legal action and the swift arrest of the officer involved, raising pressing questions regarding police accountability and safety for press personnel covering public demonstrations.
