Meta Summoned by Government Over Algorithmic Bias and Public Order

The Indian government has summoned Meta's global leadership team to New Delhi following the controversial and brief restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post regarding paper leaks.

While Meta apologized, attributing the action to a "technical glitch," the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) dismissed the response as inadequate.

Officials are pressing Meta’s executives for strict clarifications regarding systemic algorithmic bias, content moderation transparency, and the platform's overarching role in maintaining public order.

Concerns extend beyond a single technical error into broader legal frameworks, including AI-morphed deepfakes, national security, and the psychological impact of social media algorithms.

In response to the backlash, Meta has introduced enhanced safeguards, instituting multi-layered human reviews by senior officials before restricting content from prominent national figures.

The government maintains that global tech giants must be fully accountable for platform operations within the country.
