An explosion caused by a severe methane gas buildup inside a coal mining complex in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province has left at least 32 miners dead, with rescue operations scrambling to find 10 others still trapped underground.
The deadly disaster struck the Sorange mining district near the provincial capital of Quetta. Rescue efforts have faced immense obstacles due to extreme shaft depths and hazardous levels of toxic gas.
Mining disasters remain a recurring tragedy in Balochistan, primarily driven by severe safety violations, outdated equipment, and a lack of proper ventilation systems.
Labor unions have repeatedly condemned mine operators for gross negligence, prompting government officials to announce urgent financial compensation for the victims' families alongside a formal judicial inquiry into the structural and regulatory failures that allowed the catastrophe to happen.
