Hockey India has unveiled a striking new saffron primary kit for the national men's and women's teams ahead of the FIH Hockey World Cup, moving away from their traditional blue uniform.

The design incorporates a sunrise-inspired saffron hue symbolizing courage, Mandala heritage patterns, and a modern Sudarshan Chakra graphic. Hockey India defended the change, citing technical feedback from players and staff who noted that blue jerseys often blended into standard blue synthetic turfs, hindering on-field visibility.

However, the decision has sparked significant debate. Former India captain Viren Rasquinha publicly criticized the move as "embarrassing," arguing that the team's legacy is deeply tied to blue, much like global sporting icons. The shift has also drawn political scrutiny from opposition figures questioning the departure from established sporting traditions. Alongside the saffron kit, an alternate white jersey utilizing identical cultural motifs will also be used during the tournament.
