Pakistani diplomat denied entry into US, deported from Los Angeles
Los Angeles: In a major embarrassment for the country, Pakistan’s ambassador to Turkmenistan was denied entry into the US at Los Angeles airport. Ambassador K K Ahsan Wagan was also deported to his last port of departure, in a possible violation of diplomatic protocol.
Ambassador Wagan was reportedly travelling to the US for a personal visit, according to The News. He reportedly held a valid US visa and had all the necessary travel documents but was stopped by the US immigration authorities upon arrival.
The report quoted sources which said the US immigration system flagged Wagan over controversial visa references. "Ambassador K K Wagan was deported from the US. He had an immigration objection which led to his deportation," The News quoted a senior Foreign Ministry official. However, it is unclear what the "objections" were.
However, there are unconfirmed reports that he was denied entry due to allegations of administrative corruption that surfaced during his previous posting in the US. K K Wagan had earlier served as the deputy consul general at the Consulate General of Pakistan in Los Angeles.
Though Pakistan’s Foreign Office has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, the reports said Ambassador Wagan is also likely to be called back to Islamabad to explain his position due to the seriousness of the issue.
Pakistan’s top diplomatic leadership, including Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Foreign Secretary Aamna Baloch, have been made aware of the incident. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has directed its Consulate in Los Angeles to investigate the case.
The Ambassador is said to be a seasoned diplomat who hs held several top positions, including second secretary at the Embassy of Pakistan in Kathmandu, deputy head of mission/ counsellor and ambassador in Muscat and Crisis Management Unit director general at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad.
