Meta Agrees to Report Child Safety Cases to Indian Law Enforcement Amid Centre's Crackdown

Tech giant Meta has agreed to directly report child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and safety-related violations to law enforcement agencies in India.

This major policy shift follows intense regulatory pressure and probes by bodies like the NCPCR and NHRC regarding harmful content and advertisements on platforms like Instagram.

Previously, Meta routed such incident reports through US-based entities like NCMEC rather than engaging domestic authorities directly.

Government sources welcomed the decision as a crucial initial move, while firmly reiterating that child safety online is a non-negotiable fundamental principle.

Authorities have emphasized that while this compliance step is welcome, much more extensive work is required from tech intermediaries to completely sanitize digital platforms.

The Centre remains actively engaged with other social media firms to enforce proactive content tracking and tighter local accountability.
