INDIA Bloc Leaders Detained Following High-Voltage Protest Over Voter Rolls
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, alongside other INDIA bloc MPs, were detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday after staging a high-voltage protest march toward the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters.
The opposition leaders marched from Parliament Street to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the poll body of irregularities and unilateral decisions during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
After being blocked by heavy barricading and security cordons near NITI Aayog, the protest escalated when Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi pushed through to the nearby Akashvani Bhawan premises, initiating an indoor sit-in demonstration.
The escalating situation led to the evacuation of the immediate area and a massive police response.
While several opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were detained earlier during the march, the Gandhi siblings and other remaining MPs were eventually taken into custody by Delhi Police from the Akashvani Bhawan site.
The opposition has intensified its nationwide campaign, alleging severe compromise of democratic processes.
