Chlorine Gas Leak at Meerut Sewage Plant Triggers Panic and Hospitalizations

Meerut: A sudden chlorine gas leak from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Pallavpuram Phase-2, Meerut, created widespread panic and health concerns among local residents late Tuesday evening.

According to municipal authorities, the emergency originated from a faulty valve on a chlorine cylinder utilized for disinfecting wastewater. The pungent, hazardous gas rapidly drifted into the adjacent residential areas, particularly impacting neighborhoods like Akanksha Ambience Colony.

Residents quickly began reporting severe irritation in their eyes, intense coughing, and acute breathing difficulties. Several affected individuals required urgent hospital admission, while many frightened families chose to evacuate temporarily or seal themselves indoors.

Emergency response teams, including four fire tenders, local police units, and municipal technicians, arrived swiftly at the scene. Authorities used public address systems and loudspeakers to direct residents to cover their faces with wet cloths or masks and remain indoors with windows shut.

Municipal experts successfully accessed the facility, secured the damaged cylinder, and shut off the leaking valve, bringing the situation under control. Local administration and health officials remained on site overnight to monitor air quality and ensure community safety.
