Chandrasekaran Secured for Third Term at Tata Sons Amid Boardroom Tensions
The Tata Sons board has voted to grant N. Chandrasekaran a third five-year term as executive chairman, prioritizing leadership stability as the conglomerate faces intense pressure to list publicly.
While the majority backed his reappointment to steer upcoming public offerings and navigate complex regulatory mandates—such as RBI rules for upper-layer NBFCs—the decision exposed a deep boardroom divide.
Noel Tata, representing majority stakeholder Tata Trusts, reportedly voted against the extension, reflecting ongoing resistance within the trusts regarding public listing plans. Conversely, minority stakeholder Shapoorji Pallonji Group strongly supports going public.
With the Nomination and Remuneration Committee set to finalize the terms, Chandrasekaran's leadership will be vital in balancing these contrasting internal visions while guiding India's largest conglomerate through its next major structural evolution.
