A comprehensive scientific study has revealed that the devastating flash floods in Nepal were triggered by an unprecedented mountain collapse.

An estimated 2.2 square kilometre section of the Langtang Lirung peak—roughly equivalent to 300 football fields—tore away from the northern face.

A staggering 110 million cubic metres of rock and ice plunged 1,400 metres down to the valley floor, generating a powerful 5.2 magnitude seismic shock upon impact.

The resulting debris-laden torrent accelerated to an average speed of 170 kilometres per hour, racing from the valley bottom to Gyirong Port in mere minutes.

Scientists describe the catastrophe as a compound crisis driven by accelerated climate change.

Rapidly rising temperatures have thawed mountain permafrost and thinned glaciers, severely compromising the structural integrity of steep slopes.

Furthermore, researchers point out that the region's bedrock was heavily fractured and pre-conditioned for failure by the major 2015 earthquake.

This disaster resulted in a devastating loss of life, with over 1,300 fatalities, thousands missing, and widespread destruction of critical infrastructure, including multiple hydropower projects across the vulnerable Himalayan region.
