Resham Fatma: India's First Acid Attack Survivor to Win Chevening Scholarship
Resham Fatma has scripted history as India's first acid attack survivor to receive the prestigious UK government Chevening Scholarship. She is set to pursue a Master’s in Gender, Development and Globalisation at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
In 2014, at just 17 years old in Lucknow, Resham survived a brutal acid attack by a relative after refusing a marriage proposal.
Despite severe physical trauma, multiple surgeries, and social stigma, she refused to surrender to adversity.
She earned a BSc from Jamia Millia Islamia and a postgraduate degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), receiving the national Bharat Award for bravery along the way.
In 2023, she founded the Ebrah Foundation to mentor young women. Resham’s remarkable transition from surviving a horrific tragedy to securing a global academic platform stands as a powerful testament to unyielding resilience and hope.
