Allahabad HC Declines to Intervene Over Removal of Khamenei Portraits
Lucknow: The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to restrain Uttar Pradesh Police from allegedly removing portraits of Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, from private properties.
The petition, filed by the Shia organization Majlis Ulema-E-Hind, claimed police were unlawfully removing religious banners and portraits during mourning gatherings, violating constitutional rights to property and religious freedom.
However, a division bench of Justices Rajan Roy and Manjive Shukla dismissed the sweeping plea, stating the allegations were entirely "general and vague." The court observed that the petitioner failed to present a single concrete, documented instance of forceful police removal.
The bench clarified that it cannot issue blanket directives based on unverified claims, but noted that aggrieved individuals remain free to pursue specific legal remedies if their personal rights are violated.
