Sushmita Dev, Two Other Ex-TMC MPs Join BJP in fresh Bengal Twist
Kolkata: In a major political realignment in West Bengal, three former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MPs—Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Prakash Chik Baraik—formally joined the BJP on July 9, 2026. The high-profile defection occurred at the BJP’s Salt Lake headquarters, following their recent resignations from Parliament and the TMC amidst escalating party turmoil.
Sukhendu Sekhar Ray alleged facing severe threats against his family for demanding police accountability during the RG Kar medical college controversy, citing a state atmosphere of "fear and terror."
The shift sets the stage for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypolls on July 24, 2026, to fill the seats vacated by the trio. With the BJP holding a dominant 207-seat majority in the state assembly and the TMC fractured into rival factions, the saffron party is heavily favored to sweep all three parliamentary seats.
