MUMBAI: SIX KILLED, ONE INJURED AFTER CHAWL COLLAPSES IN MANKHURD AMID TORRENTIAL RAINS
MUMBAI: Six people, including five children, were killed and one person was injured after a multi-storey chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night. The tragedy occurred amid relentless heavy rainfall that has brought the city to a standstill.
The Incident
The collapse took place around 8:30 PM on Sunday at a ground-plus-three-storey chawl located in the Janta Nagar area of Mankhurd. According to civic officials, two to three tenements of the structure caved in, crashing directly onto an adjoining hut below.
Casualties and Rescue Operations
Emergency services, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, rushed to the spot to launch a massive search and rescue operation.
Deceased: Six individuals lost their lives. Five victims were declared brought dead at Shatabdi Hospital, while a seven-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Rajawadi Hospital.
Injured: A 24-year-old man sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical care at Rajawadi Hospital. Doctors have reported his condition as stable.
Rescue teams worked through the night, navigating heavy downpours and tightly packed structures, to clear the debris and ensure no other residents remained trapped underneath.
Severe Weather Cripples Mumbai
The collapse comes as Mumbai and its neighboring suburbs endure extreme monsoon conditions, with several areas recording between 200 mm and 300 mm of rain over the weekend.
City-Wide Emergency Measures:
School Closures: Following an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) red alert warning of continued heavy showers and severe waterlogging, the BMC has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday, July 6.
Separate Casualty: In another rain-related incident in Kurla, a 63-year-old man was killed after a tree collapsed onto a shop.
