Massive Rescue Operation Underway as Dozens Trapped in Sikkim Tunnel Collapse
A multi-agency rescue operation is underway in Sikkim’s Namchi district after a severe landslide triggered the collapse of an under-construction tunnel, trapping between 20 and 27 workers.
The incident occurred at the Samardung tunnel, part of the Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Power Project. At least seven casualties have been officially confirmed so far.
Rescue efforts led by the NDRF, SDRF, and local emergency services are facing extreme challenges inside the tunnel.
The landslide sealed the entrance, leading to a dangerous accumulation of toxic methane gas and severely depleted oxygen levels.
Initial responders experienced dizziness and breathing difficulties, prompting the deployment of specialized teams equipped with heavy-duty gas masks and oxygen tanks.
Medical units and ambulances remain on high alert outside as emergency personnel work tirelessly to navigate the hazardous conditions and reach the remaining trapped workers.
