Delhi High Court Allows Sonam Wangchuk’s Transfer to Private Hospital
The Delhi High Court permitted activist Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted from the state-run Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, upholding his fundamental right to receive medical care at a facility of his choice.
The order was passed by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia on an appeal filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Dr. Gitanjali Angmo. The court noted a medical consensus among doctors from AIIMS, Safdarjung, and private physicians that Wangchuk requires continuous monitoring due to concerning blood parameters following a prolonged hunger strike.
The Union government stated it had no objection to the transfer, provided he remains under expert supervision and abides by medical advice. The bench directed Safdarjung Hospital to immediately transfer all treatment records and history to Medanta.
