Farmers Mass at Shambhu Border for 'Mahapanchayat'—Key Demands Explained
Tensions flared along the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border as thousands of farmers set off for a massive 'Mahapanchayat' at Delhi's Kisan Ghat.
Organised by the Desh Bachao Morcha representing around 550 farm unions, the march triggered heavy police barricades, traffic diversions, and heightened security across border checkpoints.
Key Demands Behind the Protest:
Scrapping Proposed India–US FTA: Farmers fear that a proposed free trade deal allowing cheap, subsidized foreign agricultural imports will undercut small-scale domestic producers.
Statutory Guarantee for MSP: Legal protection ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) across all 23 key crops using the C2+50% Swaminathan formula.
Loan Waivers & Pension: A comprehensive agricultural debt waiver along with a monthly pension scheme for senior farmers and workers.
WTO Exit: Removing Indian agriculture from World Trade Organization mandates to safeguard domestic subsidies.
Justice & Legal Clearance: Justice for victims of past protest violence and the withdrawal of all ongoing criminal cases against farmers.
